NOAA's 3-day forecast looks intimidating on first glance, but it's built from just a few repeating numbers. Once you know what each panel represents, you can decide in under a minute whether tonight is worth watching the sky.
The Three-Day Kp Grid
The centerpiece is a grid of eight three-hour Kp values per day. Kp is a global measurement of geomagnetic disturbance on a 0โ9 scale. Anything at or above Kp 5 is a geomagnetic storm and means the auroral oval expands toward the equator. Look for the peak Kp in the next 24 hours and compare it to your geomagnetic latitude.
The R, S, and G Scales
R is radio blackout (from flares), S is solar radiation storm (from energetic protons), and G is geomagnetic storm (from CMEs and high-speed streams). Each runs 1โ5, mirroring the hurricane scale.
