Why it matters

Faster solar wind delivers more kinetic energy to Earth's magnetic field, making it a key ingredient — alongside a southward Bz — in triggering geomagnetic storms and aurora. Speed spikes are also one of the clearest real-time signs that a CME has arrived, since the shock front typically shows up as an abrupt jump in this number.

Normal range

Quiet, typical solar wind runs about 300-400 km/s. Elevated conditions from a coronal hole stream often reach 500-700 km/s. Fast CME-driven shocks can spike well above 700-800 km/s, and the most extreme recorded events have exceeded 2,000-3,000 km/s.

What is solar wind?

Solar wind is a continuous outflow of charged particles — mostly protons and electrons — streaming from the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, at speeds typically between 300 and 800 kilometers per second. It carries the Sun's magnetic field outward through the solar system, and when it reaches Earth, it interacts with our planet's own magnetic field. Faster solar wind, especially when paired with a southward-pointing IMF Bz, compresses and disturbs Earth's magnetosphere — which is what drives geomagnetic storms and aurora.
