How to Predict Aurora Visibility
A high Kp value doesn't automatically mean you'll see the aurora. Real visibility depends on the storm strength, your geomagnetic latitude, local cloud cover, light pollution, and the moon.
Step 1: Check the Kp Forecast
Compare the peak forecast Kp to the minimum Kp needed for your geomagnetic latitude. Rough thresholds: 60° geomag needs Kp 3+; 55° needs Kp 5+; 50° needs Kp 7+; 45° needs Kp 8+.
Step 2: Confirm with Bz
If Bz on the real-time DSCOVR plot is northward (positive), even a high-Kp forecast may produce nothing. Wait for Bz to turn southward below about -5 nT before committing to a drive.
Step 3: Local Conditions
Check cloud cover with a satellite-based forecast, not a generic weather app. Full-moon nights wash out faint aurora. Avoid cities: a Bortle-4 or darker sky can make the difference between seeing a faint arc and seeing nothing at all.
