Magnetosphere
Definition
The protective magnetic bubble around Earth carved out of the solar wind by our planet's magnetic field.
In plain language
Earth's magnetic field pushes back against the solar wind, forming a huge invisible bubble. Most solar particles flow around it โ the aurora happens when energy sneaks inside and gets funneled to the poles.
The science
The magnetosphere is the cavity dominated by the geomagnetic field: compressed to ~10 Earth radii on the dayside by solar wind pressure and stretched into a magnetotail hundreds of radii long on the nightside. Its boundary is the magnetopause; energy enters chiefly via reconnection.
Why it matters for aurora viewing
Every aurora is the magnetosphere leaking stored solar energy into the atmosphere โ its shape and behavior set where and when the lights appear.
